Pacific Ocean

I started my adventure in the Pacific Ocean by developing an addiction to catching sailfish and marlin on a fly rod. Over the last 20 plus years, I have spent countless days gazing back over the transom, watching the teasers as they made their bait-in splashing, just waiting for a hungry billfish to show up. Every one of those days, I frequently would stare down into the water and wish that I could join those billfish on their pelagic adventures!

The first time my eyes were at ocean level, peering through a mask, I remember remarking that “It’s a big ocean!” Indeed, the Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest globally, with an area of approximately 64,000,000 square miles. Extending from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, the Pacific covers a whopping 32% of the Earth’s total surface area. It is indeed a “Big Ocean!” And get this, the mean depth is 13,000 feet, and the deepest spot is the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. If you’re interested in reading a fascinating story about a man who has been to the deepest point in all the world’s oceans, pick up a copy of ________.

I have a few stories of my own from diving places like Islas Revillagigedos (Socorro Islands), where giant oceanic mantas roam, Guadalupe Islands, the home of close up encounters with great white sharks, and Costa Rica where I led a scientific expedition to tag sailfish for a study of their migration. And the ultimate adventure was working with the BBC on the filming of Blue Planet II.
